The Jewish people believed strongly that they had a special relationship with God and were his chosen people. The Jews believed God spoke to them through the prophets. Prophets were holy men and women who carried messages from GodThe Jews waited expectantly for a messiah sent by God. A leader sent by God was called a Messiah.The word Messiah means "anointed one." All great leaders were anointed or blessed with oil as a sign they were chosen by God for an important task. The Jews believed that the Messiah: Would be a powerful king-like figure Would free them from foreign rulers (Romans) Would bring Gods peace and justice to all
