    1. systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment
    2. Scientific Benefits
      1. benefit in terms of knowledge and understanding from scientific research
      2. Ethical Costs
        1. cost to the PP's of the study
          1. could be in terms of physical/psychological trauma, breach of confidetiality/privacy, use of decption, lack of right to withdraw, or lack of informed consent
          2. Environmental Influences
            1. nurture
              1. learned through interactions with the environment which includes both the physical and the social world, and may be more widely referred to as 'experience'
              2. Genetic Influences
                1. nature
                  1. refers to any ability determined by genes, including those that appear through maturation
                  2. Determinism
                    1. the view that an individuals behaviour is shaped or controlled by internal/eternal forces rather than an individuals will to do something
                    2. Free Will
                      1. the view that our behaviour is determined by our own will rather than by other forces
                        1. individuals have an active role in choosing their own behaviour
                          1. they are free to choose any course of action, and are not determined by internal/external pressures
                          2. Gender Bias
                            1. the differential treatment or representation of men and women based on stereotypes rather that real differences
                            2. Cultural Bias
                              1. the act of interpreting and judging behaviour and psychological characteristics of one culture by holding them to the standards of your own
