            1. the family has become more child centered, meaning children are looked after more - given what they want, but also restricted to be kept safe, like not allowing to play outside alone
              1. This is in the Uk, it cannot be generalised internationally - some children are trafficked and do not experience child centerdness.
              2. Increasing amount of children are experience parental break-up, 45% 13-15 year olds only live with one parent. Also, increasing number have weight problems, either obesity or anorexia. Many people suffer from depression, which can lead to self-harm and even suicide.The dividing line between child and adult is increasingly blurred, exposed to innapropriate material.Computers- parents often unable to se ewhat they are doing. Rise of social media sites has led to bulling. Children are objects of high-powered consumer campaigns, at a young age this can lea to 'pester power'.
                1. Postman - believes both origin of childhood and reasons for its decline lie in changes of communications technology.

                1. domestic labour - a 'symmetrical family' is emerging - Y&W - household tasks were shared between men and women. More equality. However, radical feminists would argue the family is still patriarchal and Y&W did not carry out a representative study.
                  1. Giddens has suggested the emergence of a new relationship ideal which he calls 'the pure relationship' - based on equality and negotiation between partners.

                    1. one type of family diversity is same-sex couples, which has come about because of the loss of stigma associated with homosexuality. Also the legalisation of gay marriage of course meant families could be formed.
                      1. 2011 - 17% of families were cohabiting couples, it often occurs after divorce or separatation- and divorce rate is increasing which therefore increases chance of cohabiting and diversity of family.

                        1. changes in the law resulting in safer working conditions - however marxists would argue this was done by ruling class in order to keep their workers alive and also hide effects of capitalism
                          1. Introduction of the national health service in 1947 providing free treatment and care

                            1. welfare payments - as more people will be drawing their pensions and may also be in need of other benefits, this will increase the welfare bill.
                              1. accommodation - there will be a growing need for place in care homes and assisted living facilities for those unable to look after themselves.There will also be a demand for suitable housing e.g. single-storey specially adapted houses
