Births
  1. The birth rate is the number of live births per 1000 of the population per year.
    1. For example, the birth rate in the UK is 12.27 per 1000 people.
    2. The total fertility rate is the average number of children a woman will have during her fertile years.
      1. For example the TFR in the UK is 1.91 children per woman.
      2. The infant mortality rate measures the number of infants who die before their first birthday, per 1000 born.
        1. For example the IMR in the UK is 4.56 deaths for every 1000 live births.
          1. However the IMR in Iran is 41.11.
          2. Reasons for the decline in the birth rate...
            1. Changes in the position of women.
              1. Legal equality with men, including the right to vote.
                1. More women in paid employment.
                  1. Laws against unequal pay and sex discrimination.
                  2. Changes in attitudes to family life and women's role.
                    1. Easier access to divorce.
                      1. Access to abortion and reliable contraception.
                        1. Women have more control over their fertility.
                      2. Decline in the infant mortality rate.
                        1. With a decline in the IMR, more of a couple's initial children will live, so they won't need to have more to 'replace' them.
                          1. Reasons for the decline in IMR...
                            1. Improved housing and better sanitation.
                              1. NHS
                                1. Better nutrition and food.
                                  1. Better knowledge and awareness of hygiene.
                                    1. Improved services for mothers.
                                  2. Children have become an economic liability.
                                    1. There are laws banning child labour, introducing compulsory schooling and raising the school leaving age.
                                      1. These mean that children remain economically dependent for longer.
                                      2. There are changing norms about what children have a right to expect from their parents.
                                        1. The cost of bringing up children has risen.
                                      3. Child centredness.
                                        1. Childhood is socially constructed.
                                          1. Shift from 'quantity' to 'quality'. Parents now have fewer children and lavish more attention and resources on these few.
