The principles of association and what they are intended to explain
Context & Significance: Section III. Reveals Hume's project of providing a 'science of the mind'; providing an apparently
mechanistic theory of the association of ideas. Reveals his 'naturalism' - scepticism in regards to human rationality.
PRINCIPLES OF ASSOCIATION -
ideas emerge from perceptions of the
mind not in a random manner, but
they introduce each other "...with a
certain degree of method and
regularity".
RESEMBLANCE - association through similar appearance. "a picture naturally leads our thoughts to the original"
CONTIGUITY - proximity/closeness. "the mention of one apartment in a building naturally introduces an enquiry or discourse concerning the others"
CAUSE & EFFECT - any idea naturally leads to the idea of its cause/effect. "if we think of a wound, we can scarcely forbear reflecting on the pain which follows it"
