Population Genetics
  1. In a population there are many different phenotypes, proteins, and alleles (DNA)
    1. Allele frequencies vary from population to population
      1. Africans have a high frequency of the sickle cell allele, Northern Europeans have a high frequency of the cystic fibrosis allele, Ashkenazi Jews have a high frequency of the Tay Sachs allele
      2. Hardy-Weinberg Law
        1. Frequencies of alleles of the same gene will remain the same from generation to generation provided: that population is infinitely large, mating is random, selection is not occurring, no mutation , no migration
          1. Problem: populations vary in size
            1. Genetic Drift
              1. Random changes in gene frequencies due to chance; seen in small populations
                1. Causes
                  1. Size is small over a long period of time
                    1. Founder Effect
                      1. Bottleneck Effect
                        1. Genetic bottleneck: some genotypes do not survive
                  2. Problem: there are many situations where mating is not random
                    1. Positive Assortative mating, Negative Assortative mating
                    2. Problem: inbreeding
                      1. Preferential mating between close relatives. Often a necessity if the population is small
                      2. Problem: Endogamy
                        1. Marrying within a group
