There are three different types of cartilaginous tissue:
Hyaline
Semi-transparent and appears bluish white in colour. Extremely strong but very flexible and elastic
At joint surfaces provides cushioning and a smooth gliding surface
In trachea, prevents trachea wall from caving in
Fibrous
Toughest of cartilage types
Acts as shock absorber between bones and provides high level of support
Elastic
This contains more elastic fibres
Helps maintain shape and flexibility and provides support
