    1. Particle Waves
      1. Particles are forced together or pushed apart
        1. This is a longitudinal wave
      2. Sound can be translated into transverse waves using an oscilloscope
        1. The larger the amplitude, the louder the volume
          1. The larger the wavelength, the lower the pitch
            1. Hertz (Hz) is a frequency measure. It is the amount of waves in a second
              1. Therefore it can tell us the pitch - the larger the Hz, the higher the pitch
          2. The Ear
            1. The ear has three sections:
              1. Outer Ear
                1. The inner ear collects sound which vibrates the eardrum
                  1. Sound is collected by the Pinna (cartilage)
                    1. This magnifies 3x-4x
                  2. Middle ear
                    1. Sound travels along three bones
                      1. This amplifies the sound 22x
                      2. It is filled with air
                        1. It is joined to the back of the throat
                          1. This is to relieve pressure
                            1. Both sides of the eardrum must have similar air pressure levels
                        2. Inner ear
                          1. This is made up of two main structures
                            1. Cochlea
                              1. This detects sound
                                1. The ossicles create waves in the fluid
                                  1. Sensors detect the waves and send nerve impulses to the brain
                              2. 3 Semi-circular canals
                                1. These are placed in each plane of movement
                                  1. X - Across
                                    1. Y - Up
                                      1. Z - Along
                                  2. Fluid filled
                              3. Properties
                                1. Sound is not part of the electromagnetic spectrum
                                  1. It travels as a particle wave
                                    1. Therefore, it requires the vibration of particles and objects
                                      1. Sound does not travel in space or a vacuum
