1. Caries develops below contact point
2. Difficult to detect clinically
3. Rely on bw radiographs as well as radiographs
TREATMENT OF CLASS III
1. Caries often found next to gingival margin
2. Often contaminated with blood
3. Use rubber dam where possible
4. access caries from palatal/lingual - where poss leave labial enamel
5. Remove caries from adj and leave unsupported enamel
CLASS III
1. Much rarer than class II
2. Develops below contact point
3. Easier to detect clinically
4. Restoration is by direct access
DIAGNOSIS
1. Visual inspection
2. Transillumination
  1. Bw's
WHEN TO INTERVENE
1. If caries is confined to enamel, leave and apply fluoride
2. if into ADJ, cavitated, visible on bw
GAINING ACCESS TO APPROXIMAL CARIES - POSTERIOR
1. Occlusally cutting through marginal ridge
2. occ, bucc, ling leaving marginal ridge intact
3. direct access if adjacent tooth is missing

Outline form
1. gain access occ leaving slither of enamel
2. using exc or ging marg trimmer remove slither of enamel
3. remove caries and clear contact point
4. tidy margins, remove unsupported enamel

6. line if necessary and place amalgam

1. Each side of cavity prepared seperately
2. occ section kept as narrow as poss
MATRIX BANDS
1. To retain material in cavity
2. to restore contact point
3. Tofflemire or Sqiveland
TUNNEL PREP
1. Gains access to caries and leaves marg intact
2. only indicated for small lesions
3. approach ling,bucc, occ
4. ADVANTAGES - conserves tooth tissue
  1. DISADVANTAGES - difficult, marg ridge prone to #
5. not always good access to caires
