Theories of Language Acquisition
  1. Noam Chomsky (1950s-present)
    1. Babies are born with an innate knowledge of language structure
      1. Unique LAD (Language Acquisition Device) enable us to learn language.
        1. Genie and feral children support the critical period hypothesis.
          1. Critical period hypothesis = language needs to be acquired within a certain time frame.
          2. Some interaction is necessary for language development
            1. Children stop overgeneralising and learn to use language correctly.
              1. Children deprived of social contact can't achieve complete communicative competence.
                1. Most linguists believe there must be something innate in a child.
                  1. What is innate?
                    1. Content
                      1. Primary linguistic data (speech around child)
                        1. Innate specific knowledge about language
                          1. Internal grammar
                            1. Speech
                      2. Process
                        1. Primary linguistic data (speech around child)
                          1. Innate puzzle solving equipment
                            1. Internal grammar
                              1. Speech
                    2. Children internalise language rules and overgeneralise e.g: walked, ambled, throwed
                      1. Wug experiment (1985) - Jean Berko-Gleason
                        1. Supports Chomsky's idea of LAD
                          1. Gave 4-5 yr olds a picture of an imaginary creature called a wug
                            1. 3/4s of children formed the regular plural "wugs" when shown a picture of more than one creature.
                          2. Nativist approach - humans have an inbuilt capacity to acquire language
                            1. Universal grammar AKA linguistic universals - the explanation that all world languages share the principles of grammar despite surface differences in lexis and phonology.
                            2. B.F Skinner (1957)
                              1. Children learn to speak through imitation of parents
                                1. Children receive rewards/punishments according to the accuracy of utterances.
                                  1. His theory has only been tested on animals.
                                    1. Children do more than just imitate
                                      1. They can hear ungrammatical spoken language but learn correct language
                                      2. Children don't respond to correction and it might slow development.
                                        1. They imitate but don't necessarily understand meaning.
                                          1. Wrote Verbal Behaviour in 1957

                                              1. Every function in the child's cultural development appears twice.
                                                1. ZPD = Zone of Proximal Development
                                                  1. Level of development attained when children engage in social behaviour.
                                                    1. Gap between what they know and what they can potentially achieve via socialisation with peers/adults.
                                                    2. First utterances are to communicate but once mastered they become internalised and allow inner speech.
                                                      1. Cognitive development is limited to a certain range at any given age
