1.5 Network Topologies, protocols and layers V2 Joshua Guerrero
  1. A Star network
    1. Each device is connected by an individual cable directly to the server .They tend to be more reliable and so are usually used in schools and offices
    2. Ethernet
      1. Stable Connection
        1. Reduced possibility to be hacked
          1. Faster Trafic speed
            1. Generally will have good signal
            2. WIFI
              1. Benifits
                1. Cheap set-up costs
                  1. More vulnerable to hacking
                    1. The signal quality will reduce through walls or obstructions
                      1. Can connect multiple devices with no hardware
                        1. Interface can occur
                          1. May not able to receive signals
                            1. Tends to have slow transfer speeds
                              1. The connection is stable
                              2. Wireless Frequency
                                1. Radio waves are used to transmit data packets without the need for wires
                              3. Encryption
                                1. Encryption is a method of scrambling data with a key code which makes no sense
                                  1. On an open or public WIFI network anyone can join and sniff out packets of data from other users.
                                    1. Therefore encryption is used .If intercepted the data will have no meaning
                                2. Portocols
                                  1. IP
                                    1. Internet Protocol
                                      1. This is also known a IP address
                                    2. HTTP = Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
                                      1. HTTP transmits data over the internet in a unsecure format
                                      2. HTTPS = Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure
                                        1. HTTPS uses encryption so that any data that is intercepted is meaningless.
                                        2. POP
                                          1. Post office protocol
                                            1. Send and receive emails
                                          2. A set of rules
                                            1. IMAP
                                              1. Used to retrieve emails
                                              2. SMTP

                                              3. Packets
                                                1. A packet is the unit of data that is routed between an origin and a destination on the Internet or any other packet-switched network
                                                  1. It is data put in individual packets
                                                    1. The packet is sent and read
                                                      1. Calculate checksum
                                                        1. Once received it checks for missing packets
                                                          1. If one is missing then it sends an error message
                                                            1. Then it will reassemble and send the other packet .
                                                              1. Then it will receive the data and there will be a confirmation message
                                                    2. Packets contain
