Question Answer
Fugue A fugue is a polyphonic (contrapuntal) composition. It begins with the theme - called the subject - playing a single line (no accompaniment). Other voices enter in succession, imitating the subject.
Subject The main theme in a fugue.
Countersubject In a fugue, after the subject or answer is played the continuation on the same instrument is called the countersubject.
Answer The imitation which follows the subject in a fugue.
Stretto Voices enter one at at time, quickly after he previous entry.
Antiphonal Dialogue between one group of instruments and another.
Bridge A passage of music which links two main themes.
Leitmotiv A reoccurring theme intended to bring in mind a specific character, mood, location etc.
Inversion Mirror image effect. If a phrase begins with three notes ascending at a tone each time then the inversion phrase would be three notes descending at a tone each time.
Retrograde Backwards. Often heard in serial music.
Song Cycle A group of songs linked by a common theme.
