QWERTY keyboard Most common type of input device and it consist of keys(numbers, letters etc.).Some keyboards are ergonomics and have been designed to reduce RSI.
Keypad Smaller versions of keyboards and used in small devices like mobile phones
Mouse Most common type of input devices to move pointer around the screens and select options by clicking. Could be either mechanical or optical
Mechanical mouse Uses rolling ball to sense position
Optical Mouse Uses light sensor to detect motion
Trackpad Found in laptops and uses fingertips to control the computer's cursor
Magnetic strip cards These are easy to read but can't hold much data and can be easily scratched
Smart card Computer chip built in and holds data on the chip, data can be also written on it. The use of card has to be authorised by PIN therefore more secure e.g. credit card
Optical Mark Recognition Uses light beam to sense the position of pencil or other marks on data capture forms
Optical Character recognition Uses a scanner and a specialist software to turn paper based text into computer characters
PDA Small computer, usually about the size of a hand.Combine input and output.Has a handwriting recognition software.Used device by stylus or fingertips
Radio Frequency ID Uses radio waves to transmit unique serial numbers as form of ID objects
Flat-bed scanners Has a flat glass plate where the document is placed
Barcode scanner Form of flat-bed scanner used in supermarkets
Hand-held scanner Mainly used in shops that sell large items
In sheet-feed scanner Scanner stay still and the paper is moved over
Magnetic Ink Character recognition Uses magnetic ink to print characters shaped to ANSI standards which can be read and used to direct cheques and other negotiable document
Sampling A way of recording sound digitally so that it can be input into a computer
Sample rate Number of times per second, a sound reading is taken
MIDI Music can be entered into a computer through instruments linked to computer
Webcam Small video camera that are often used for video calls (videoconferencing)
Digital Camera Takes digital versions of a scene that has been photographed. Can be connected to computer by cable or Bluetooth. Resolution varies in each camera.
Game controllers Example of a special purpose device as computer games often demand fast response times
Handwriting software Handwritten notes or paper-based text is converted into characters that can be processed by a computer.
Graphic tablets Used mainly for drawing.A stylus is used to draw on a flat plate.Stylus feels rather more natural to draw than a mouse.
Video conferencing Captures and transmit sound and video to allow people, in different geographical locations, to see and talk to each other.
Speech recognition software User speaks into microphone (capture and digitalisation).The sounds of words are compared with a dictionary of sound (phonetic classification) and converted into computer-readable text
Drum scanner Gives high-definition images
