Question Answer
Describe the formation of ions by electron loss or gain If electrons are lost depending on the charge of each element on the periodic table more electrons will be added to the outer shell of the atom.
Describe the formation of ionic bonds between metals and non metals. Metals, on the left-hand side of the periodic table, have just a few outside electrons. It will be easiest for them to form ions by losing electrons. Non-metals atoms have almost complete energy levels. It will be easiest for them to form ions by gaining electrons.
Describe the lattice structure of ionic compounds as regular arrangement for alternating positive and negative ions.Exemplified by the sodium chloride structure. When sodium reacts with chlorine, billions of sodium and chloride ions form, and are attracted to each other. But the ions do not stay in pairs. Instead, they cluster together, so that each ion is surrounded by six ions of opposite charge. They are held together by strong ionic bonds – (each ion forms six bonds).
