Question Answer
The positions of elements in the periodic table are linked to what? The positions of elements in the periodic table are linked to their physical and chemical properties.
Groups A group is a vertical column. Each element in a group has atoms with the same number of outer-shell electrons and similar properties.
Atomic Number Reading from left to right, the elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number. Each successive element has atoms with one extra proton.
Trend across a Period - Period 2 Across period 2, the 2s sub-shells fill with two electrons, followed by the 2p sub-shell which fills with 6 electrons
Trend across a Period - Period 3 Across period 3, the 3s sub-shells fill with two electrons, followed by the 3p sub-shell which fills with 6 electrons
Trend across a Period - Period 4 Although the 3d sub-shell is involved, the highest number shell is n=4. From the n=4 shell, only 4s and 4p shells are occupied.
Trend down a Group - Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell - Elements in each groups also have atoms with the same number of electrons in each sub-shell - This gives elements in the same group their similar characteristics/chemistry.
Periods Elements are arranged in horizontal rows called periods, the number of the period gives the number of the highest energy electron shell in an elements atoms.
Periodicity Across each period there is a repeating trend in properties of the elements called periodicity.
What are the most obvious periodicity properties is the trend from metals to non-metals - Electron Configuration - Structure - Melting Points - Ionisation Energy
