Question Answer
Atoms are the small particles... ...that make up all matter.
The nucleus contains the particles: protons and neutrons.
_____ moves around the outside of the atom? Electrons
Protons have a... ...positive electric charge.
Neutrons have... ...no electric charge.
Electrons have... ...a negative electric charge.
Protons and neutrons are... ...much heavier than electrons.
The mass number is... ...the number of protons and neutrons added together.
The atomic number is... ...the number of protons and the number of electrons.
How do I find the number of protons or the number of electrons? You just find out the atomic number (smaller number).
How do I work out the number of neutrons? You just subtract the atomic number from the mass number (big number minus small number).
What are Isotopes? Isotopes are atoms with the same atomic number but different mass numbers -> same numbers of protons/electrons but different number of neutrons.
How do I work out the overall mass number? Add the fraction of one isotope times by the mass number for that isotope to the fraction for the other isotope times by the mass number for that isotope.
True or False: In the periodic table, elements in vertical groups are similar. True.
What are the horizontal rows in the periodic table called? Periods.
The group number tells you... ...the number of electrons in the outer shell eg: group 1 atoms have 1 electron in their outer shells.
Are the noble gases "happy" or "sad"? Why? They are happy because they have full outer shells and are stable.
Metals and non-metals can react together by giving and gaining electrons in... ...ionic bonding.
An ion is... ...a positively or negatively charged particle.
