Description

This flash card deck covers moments and the conditions of equilibrium. It is best used in conjunction with the mind map on force & momentum, and the note on moments of a force & equilibrium.

Question Answer
Moment of a force Force x perpendicular distance to the fulcrum
Fulcrum A fixed point about which a rigid body is free to rotate
Lever A rigid body that is free to rotate about a fixed axis
Couple A pair of equal and opposite forces whose lines of action do not coincide
Torque (of a couple) Magnitude of one of the forces multiplied by the distance between them
Equilibrium When a body is neither accelerating nor changing its rate of rotation
1st condition for equilibrium The vector sum of the forces in any direction is zero
2nd condition for equilibrium ( = Principle of moments) The vector sum of moments about any point is zero
