What is the digestive systems function? it breaks down food into small enough parts to be used by cells
What is the esophagus? tube that connects mouth to the stomach
What is mechanical digestion? physical breakdown of food into small pieces
what is chemical digestion? breakdown of large particles into smaller particles by substances called enzymes
what are the parts of the digestive tract? (in order) mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine
What are organs that help in digestion? liver and pancreas
What 2 general things make up the digestive system? digestive tract+digestive organs= digestive system
Where does food enter? mouth
Where does undigested food exit? anus
How long does digestion take? 2-3 days
Where does chemical digestion start? mouth
Where does most of the chemical digestion take place? small intestine
What is bile? liquid that breaks down fat and oils
What are enzymes? a protein that controls chemical activities
Can you live without enzymes? NO
What type of enzymes help digest food? Where were they made from? digestive enzymes they were made from special group cells called glands
Where are the tiny digestive glands found? in the walls of the stomach and small intestine
Where are digestive glands found outside of the digestive tract? salivary glands (3 pair-mouth) and pancreas
Enzymes from the glands enter the digestive tract through what? small tubes
Does food pass through the glands? Glands help in digestion, but food does not pass through them
What do salivary glands produce? saliva, made mostly out of water
What does saliva contain? amylase- an enzyme
What does saliva do to food? moistens it, making it easier to swallow
