What is CPR used for? CPR is used when someone's heart has stopped, usually as the result of a heart attack.
The four R's of CPR Risk Recognize React Resuscitate
Explain what Risk means. Something that increases the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke. There are 2 kinds Uncontrollable risks factors like race, age, and gender. And controllable factors like Smoking, Cholesterol, high blood Pressure, Diabetes, Obesity, Lack of exercise, and Stress.
Recognize: Signs of a heart attack? Signs of a stroke Heart attack: Pain, pale, puffing, pooped, puking, fear and denial. Stroke: Sudden paralysis, speech problems, slurred speech, weakness, numbness, dizziness, numbness and fear and denial.
Explain what react means assess the situation and react with first aid which includes CPR
explain Resuscitation Remember CAB-D Compressions: chest compressions to help blood flow. Airway: Takeout anything blocking air from getting in. Breathing: Do mouth to mouth Defibrillation: If you started CPR make sure help is coming especially someone with a defibrillator.
2 main steps? Pushing on a person's chest to force blood flow through the body and brain. Mouth-to-mouth breathing providing oxygen to the lungs.
what are Arteries? A system of tubes that deliver oxygenated blood to the heart and all the other tissues in the body.
What are Veins? Once the muscles uses the oxygen the blood that delivered it returns to the heart through a system of tubes called veins.
What happens if parts of the body does not receive a constant supply of blood? If it doesn't receive a constant supply of oxygenated blood it will stop beating and the tissue will die.
What causes a heart attack? If arteries are blocked by cholesterol or fat the blood will not be able to flow and cause a heart attack.
Define Heart attack and Stroke Heart attack: If artery is blocked in the heart. Stroke: If artery is blocked in the brain.
What causes a Stroke? Arteries that lead to the brain slowly get partially blocked by cholesterol or fat deposits that can reduce the amount of blood getting to the brain.
If blockage is in the LEFT part of the brain, where should the symptoms appear If blockage is in the LEFT part of the brain, symptoms should appear on the RIGHT side of the body and vice versa.
What should you do if you suspect a stroke? Ask- can you lift both arms? can you smile? Speak a simple sentence ? can you squeeze my hands?
Treatment of a stroke and heart attack? Position in a comfortable position Loosen tight clothing Talk, ask questions, comfort, medication? ever happened before?
