Uses and Gratifications Theory Bulmer & Katz- Audiences consume media for specific reasons such as social interaction, education, identification, or entertainment.
Pick & Mix Theory Audience pick to watch a genre they like, ie mystery fans would rather watch True Detective than Casualty
BBFC British Board of Film Classification- protect audiences from unwanted vulgarity. Ratings - U, PG, 12A, 12, 15, 18
Reception Theory Stuart Hall - audiences can have different readings to a text- preferred, negotiated, and oppositional. A dominant reading is the intended effect by producers of the text
How to engage a viewer? Via micro elements from the text's respective genre- ie horror films engage audiences w/ sinister scores, long unedited shots to build suspense while action films engage audiences with fast paced fight scenes or car chases
Identification with characters If characters in the film are a certain age and gender, dealing with realistic issues at that time of a person's life- ie Nowhere Boy the rites of passage film- it will attract audiences who identify with that character (teenagers)
