Question Answer
Topic 3 Respiration
Respiration is a chemical process which releases energy in living organisms RESPIRATION IS NOT BREATHING!
aerobic respiration: respiratory surfaces such as alveoli of lungs and leaves of a plant are adapted for gas exchange:
1. large surface area - more opportunity for gases to be exchanged 2. thin - short diffusion distance 3. permeable - allows gases to pass through 4. moist - allows gases to dissolve 5. steep concentration gradient - blood supply most of these characteristics are the same as the villi in the ileum (except moist)
anaerobic respiration: (humans) to get rid of the lactic acid build up we tend to breathe faster (panting) and our heard beats faster
anaerobic respiration: (plants/yeast) the examiners often use bread making to test your knowledge of this...
making bread: *cover the dough (containing yeast) *it will rise due to the carbon dioxide which is being produced rising *when you put it in the oven the ethanol produced is evaporated experiment to show the carbon dioxide is produced during yeast respiration:
*the yeast is in glucose which is boiled to remove oxygen (as it has to respire anaerobically) and cooled so the yeast isn't killed *in the second test tube lime water would be put in as it is an indicator if carbon dioxide. it turns from colourless to cloudy over time carbon dioxide will stop being released either because there is no glucose left to be broken down or there is a build up of ethanol which can become toxic and kill the yeast
