Question Answer
Abortion Removing a foetus prematurely from the womb, before it is able to survive.
Infertility An inability to conceive a child.
Artificial Insemination by the Husband (AIH) Sperm from he husband is injected to the wife's womb.
Artificial Insemination by Donor (AID) Sperm from a sperm bank is injected into a woman's womb.
In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) Eggs are fertilised in a test tube and one or two are implanted into the woman's womb.
Egg Donation Where an egg from a different woman is used.
Cloning A possible future technique for creating children genetically identical to one parent.
Euthanasia Killing someone painlessly to relieve suffering, especially from an incurable illness. It's often called mercy killing.
Voluntary Euthanasia An ill person actively requests assistance to die, or refuses treatment which is keeping them alive. The person decides they want to die and seeks help to achieve this.
Non-voluntary Euthanasia When the patient is unable to make such a request, and the decision is made by someone else - usually a doctor or family member.
Suicide When someone takes their own life - usually because of depression or illness.
Attempted Suicide Failed suicide. It used to be a crime in the UK but is now seen as a sign that someone needs help.
Assisted Suicide When a doctor provides someone the means to end their own life, usually by prescribing a lethal dose of medication.
Double Effect Giving a patient an excess amount of painkillers which can cease suffering but can also lead to eventual death.
