Functionalism and Education Theorists
Parsons Secondary Socialisation- a bridge between family and wider society. family- The child is treated with particularistic standards. Schools- Child is treated with universalistic standards.
Durkheim -Social Solidarity- people are cemented together due to sharing the same norms and values - correspondence theory Schools are miniature versions of wider society to prepare children for adult roles
Davis and Moore -Role allocation: Sifts and sorts students in terms of their ability. -Social stratification: The most talented students get the best jobs.
Hargreaves -Schools place to much emphasis on the individual and not enough on group life/ society -Subcultures may form where individuals reject the values of school and wider society
Criticisms.. -Marxists argue that educational industries tend to transmit a dominant culture. -Traditional functions of education are becoming increasingly impractical as globalisation progresses.
Criticisms... The New Right and New Labour tend to emphasise the economic importance of education and have down played the significance of transmitting a shared culture.
