Question Answer
Two main functions of monosaccharides. 1) primary energy source for fuelling cell metabolism. 2) to participate in reduction reactions.
Lactose: a) What is the enzyme responsible for the catalysis? b) What are the products of hydrolysis? c) Where is it naturally found? a) Lactase. b) Galactose and Glucose. c) Found in dairy products; it is the primary carbohydrate for suckling mammalian infants.
Maltose: a) What is the enzyme responsible for the catalysis? b) What are the products of hydrolysis? c) Where is it naturally found? a) Amylase. b) a-glucose + a-glucose. c) Found in germinating seeds as they break down their starch stores to use for food.
Sucrose: a) What is the enzyme responsible for the catalysis? b) What are the products of hydrolysis? c) Where is it naturally found? a) Sucrose. b) a-glucose + B-fructose. c) Found as table salt and is derived from sugar cane.
Suggest how the digestive disorder lactose intolerance arises. Lactose intolerance arises because some people lack the enzyme lactase which means that when they eat dairy products the lactose isn't broken down causing wind and diarrhoea.
