Additional Notes - Son of a famous horn player and minor composer Franz Strauss - leading German composer of late Romantic and early modern eras. - One of the most famous conductors of his time - His favorite composers were Beethoven, Wagner and Mozart. Also loved Berloiz and Liszt _excelled in Tone poems, Lieder and operas
Two periods of his Creative Life 1 - Birth until 1910 - noted for modern tendencies. Brilliant and difficult writing for huge orchestra, chromaticism that verges on atonality at times. Considered avant garde " The Naughty Boy" of music. Most enduring music was composed in this time 2 - 1911 - 1949 - Style changed as a reaction against what he percieved as extreme tendencies of his time by Schoenburg and others. Became more conservative and romantic and less bold. Critics called him reactionary. This music wasn't as popular.
