Question Answer
What is decanting? When you pour off top layer of settled suspension.
What is sieving? Using device with holes to separate different sized substances in a mixture.
What is centrifugation? Spinning unsettled suspension at high speeds to settle it out.
What is filtration? Using device with very fine pores to separate different sized substances.
Benefits of decanting? Simple and easy to do.
Limitations of decanting? Can only be used on settled suspensions.
Benefits of sieving? Simple and easy to do.
Limitations of sieving? Can only be used on different sized substances where only 1 can fit into the hole.
Benefits of centrifugation? One of the few ways to settle out a suspension that may never settle.
Limitations of centrifugation? Hard to do, can only be used on unsettled suspensions.
Benefits of filtration? Useful when a suspension can't be separated using gravity. Easy to do.
Limitations of filtration? Can only be used when one substance can fit in the holes, and the other can't.
Examples of decanting? Pouring off water from vegetables. Pouring wine into container, leaving sediment behind.
Examples of sieving? Used to ensure only rocks of correct size go into rock crusher. To grade soil by size for classification.
Examples of filtration? To separate coffee grounds from filter coffee. To separate dust from air using mask filter.
Examples of centrifugation? Spin cycle of washing machine. Salad spinners to dry washed lettuce.
