Why do lipids have the highest energy value? Most ATP is made in oxidative phosphorylation which requires hydrogen atoms from redNAD and redFAD. This means that respiratory substrates that contain more hydrogen atoms per unit of mass cause more ATP to be produced when respired. Lipids contain the most H atoms per unit of mass
What is the equation for RQ? RQ = (Volume of CO₂ released) / (Volume of O₂ consumed) OR RQ = (Molecules of CO₂ released) / (Molecules of O₂ consumed)
What is the RQ for proteins? 0.8 - 0.9
What is the RQ for lipids? 0.7
What is the RQ for carbohydrates? 1.0
What can RQs be used for? To determine which substrate is being used
Why are RQs considered unreliable? Very few organisms only use one type of substrate. It gives you an indication of which substrate is being used but you can never be sure
