Specific phobia specifiers/types 1. Animal 2. Natural environment 3. Blood-injection-injury (BII) 4. Situational 5. Other
Specific phobia types: how distinct are they? 1. Usually multiple specific phobia. 2. BII more unique: increase in heart rate/blood pressure, equal in men and women, onset in children. 3. Animal/natural environment: group together. 4. situational type starts later, more fear of panic.
Features of specific phobia 11% lifetime prevalence, common disorder. Age of onset: 10. Comorbid with panic attacks. Almost always involves some type of classical conditioning.
Disgust sensitivity Disgust is one of the basic emotions, can be adaptive, increased parasympathetic activity. Sensitivity: Frequent and intense feelings of disgust in response to different stimuli. Eleveated in BII phobia and some animal phobia. Treatment of fobia decreases disgust sensitivity.
