Las siguientes letras, aunque no existen en el alfabeto italiano, se utilizan en palabras de origen extranjero (estas palabras tienden a conservar la pronunciación original): j (i lunga), k (), w (vu doppia), x (ics), y (ipsilon).

En italiano, todo lo que se pronuncia se escribe, todo lo que se escribe se pronuncia (salvo la h): chiunque (kiunküe) cualquiera que, pieghevole (pieguevole).
