Passive

1.       Bella is the name that she has been given by her English teacher.- 2.       But at the same time these new values are also being questioned. 3.       Have our lives been made richer by all our new possession? 4.       Is Chinese culture being supplanted? 5.       When they go shopping Bella makes sure that the right western brands are selected. 6.       Our advice is not listened to and it is not wanted, her mother said.   a.       The person doing the action – the agent isn’t the main focus of the sentence. 6 b.      We use from to introduce the agent in a passive voice. 1 c.       The agent is often unimportant or unknown – it is the action that interests us. 4 d.      The passive is often used because we want to start a sentence with something that has already been mentioned. 2   1.       They are changing people’s lives every day. People’s lives are being changed every day. 2.       We make new plans all the time. New plans are made all the time by us. 3.       The government is bringing in some new laws. Some new laws are being brought in by the government. 4.       They have changed the whole system since I was a student. The whole system has been changed. 5.       Young people are forgetting the old way of life. The old way of life is being forgotten by young people. 6.       We haven’t seen good manners for a very long time. Good manners have not been seen for a long time. 7.       We are still respecting a lot of the old customs. A lot of the old customs are still being respected. 8.       Are they respecting the way that people used to live? Is the way that people used to live being respected?   1.       Children grow up much too quickly today. Girls of twelve dress as if they are eighteen. 2.       We are left behind by all the new technology they use. 3.       Our grandparents probably worked harder than us, but they didn’t have so much fun. 4.       They live longer and longer and we are being expected to look after them. 5.       Our parents aren’t so different to us: they listen to the same music for example. 6.       In recent years respect for wisdom and knowledge was replaced by respect for money. 7.       I rebelled against my parents. My children feel that they are expected to rebel but in fact they have nothing to complain about or rebel against. 8.       We are often criticised for being selfish and having no moral values but that’s our parents’ fault we were being spoilt by them.
