Transport in Humans
The circulatory system
needed for transport of:
nutrients
wastes
hormones
antibodies
consists of:
heart (pump)
blood (with blood pigments to carry oxygen)
blood vessels (arteries/arterioles, veins/venules, capillaries)
blood vessels and their functions
arteries- oxygenated blood away from heart, thick outer walls, under high pressure
veins- de-oxygenated blood towards heart, thin walls, under low pressure
capillaries- tiny blood vessels, slow blood flow-allows diffusion to take place
Double circulatory system
blood flows through the heart twice on a complete journey around the body
there are two systems: pulmonary (to the heart), systematic (to the rest of the body)
Blood
45% cells, 55% plasma
carries oxygen via haemaglobin
contains white blood cells which help immunity
transports: blood cells, dissolved nutrients, carbon dioxide, hormones, vitamins and mineral ions
Red Blood Cells
disc shaped with conclave centre
large surface area for absorbing oxygen
full of haemaglobin used for carrying oxygen (gives blood red pigment
no nucleus- more room for carrying oxygen
made in bone marrow
white blood cells
have a nucleus
do not carry oxygen
are involved in immune response
contain phagocytes
engulf and destroy foreign materials such as bacteria
contain lymphocytes
proteins called antibodies which attack foreign materials
respiration
the release of energy from food substances in all living things
uses of energy
growth
cell division
movement
maintaining body temp.
active transport
aerobic respiration
oxygen+sugar - carbon dioxide+water
aerobic respiration
sugar+oxygen - carbon dioxide+water+energy
C6H2O6+6O2 = 6CO2+6H2O+energy
part of this reaction occurs in the mitochondria
Anaerobic respiration
the release of energy from food without combining it with oxygen
in muscles
suagr - lactic acid+energy
C6H12O6 = 2C3H6O3+energy
this reaction occurs in the cytoplasm of cells
lactic acid is carried to the liver in the blood.
oxygen debt is created - meaning that the lactic acid still needs to be broken down again using oxygen, therefor you will continue to breath
Yeast
sometimes called fermentation
sugar = alcohol+carbon dioxide+energy
C6H12O6 = 2C2H5OH+2CO2+energy
