Resource summary
Adding and Subtracting positive and negative numbers
Integers are whole numbers. They can be positive or negative. Positive numbers are above zero and negative numbers are below zero.
Example:
The temperature at 2am was -3. By 2pm it had risen 10 degrees. What was the new temperature? -3 + 10=7 degrees
Adding a negative number is the same as subtracting a positive number. 6+-4 is the same as 6-4=2
Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding a positive number. 6 - -5 becomes 6+5=11
