What is Authentic Assessment?
The use of real world problems to assess student aquisition of knowledge
Example:: Ms Pass needs to store our juice boxes. Use the juices boxes available to decide how many will fit in the box.
Why Authentic Assessment?
Authentic Assessment goes beyond simply regurgitating information.
Allows teachers to assess how students construct meaning as well as verify acquistion of knowledge.
Students are able to show their knowledge in a variety of ways.
When I give my students tasks that use multiple skills I have taught, I can see where gaps in learning are.
What are the steps to designing an Authentic Assessment?
Step 1: Decide what you want your students to know or be able to do. This is your standard.
Students will use the Scientific process to design and carry out an experiment.
Step 2: Design an authentic assessment to determine if students have mastered standard.
Task: Choose one of the four questions below. Use the Scientific process to answer the question.
How does a banana slice change over time?
Which towel absorbs the most water?
Which method keeps bread freshest?
What will keep apple slices from turning brown?
Step 3: Decide on the criteria that exemplifies a good performance.
Your experiment must have....
A clearly stated hypothesis
Only on Variable.
Be a fair test.
Easy to follow procedures.
Information or research from more than one source.
A table or graph showing your collected data.
A statement of your results.
Step 4: Design a Rubric or a grading scale for students to grade their own work.

How can Authentic Assessment be used with CLD learners?
Authentic assessment can be used to build a portfolio of learning.
The student portfolio can be a mixture of work chosen by the student and teacher to show the students strengths.
Assessments can be differentiated to meet the students needs.
Concerns about High Stakes Testing and CLD Learners.
When are accommodations allowed for CLD learners?
Insufficient Language proficiency as determined by educational professionsals
Separate Educational needs including but not limited to learner disabilities.
How can a test be culturally responsive?
Material must be comprehensible for the learner.
Material must not contain cultural bias.
