States Of Matter IGCSE CHEMISTRY
  1. there are 3 states of matter
    1. SOLIDS: particles are arrenged in neat rows, they are all touching, they cant move they vibrate
      1. LIQUIDS: the particles are all touching, free to move
        1. GASES: particles are very far apart but are free to move
          1. experiment:
            1. water evaporated
              1. gas condensed
                1. ice melted
              2. diffusion
                1. diffusion is the random movement of particles from a higher concentration to a lower concentratuon
                  1. diffusion is much faster in gases than liquids because there is more space between particles
                    1. in hot water the particles are vibrating more and bump more between each other
                    2. elements, compounds, mixtures and molecules
                      1. ATOMS: it is the smallest thing that an object can be broken down into
                        1. ELEMENTS: a substance made up of only one type of atom
                          1. COMPOUNDS: two or more different atoms chemically bonded together
                            1. MIXTURE: two or more atoms mixed together but not chemically bounded
                              1. MOLECULE: when two or more atoms are chemically bonded a molecule can be a compound or an element
                              2. solubility
                                1. SOLUBLE: something that can be disolved
                                  1. INSOLUBLE: something that cannot be disolved
                                    1. SOLUTE: solid that disolves
                                      1. SOLUTION: mixture of the solute and solvent
                                        1. SATURATION: nothing more can be dissolved if the solution is saturated
                                          1. experiment: add spatulas of salt to water until it reaches the saturation point
                                          2. EXPERIMENT: add salt/ potassium n to ethanol/ water
                                            1. to calculate the solubility: mass of solute/ volume of solvent
                                            2. Separating mixtures
                                              1. filtering: an insoluble solid from a liquid (eg. sand and water)
                                                1. evaporation: a soluble solid from a liquid
                                                  1. sieving: solids of different sizes( e.g sand and pebbles)
                                                    1. distillation: a somvent from its solution(e.g ethanol from wine)
                                                      1. chromotography: a mixture of dyes (e.g yellow and red from orange)
