  1. atherosclerotic plaques in large blood vessels in brain
2. small penetrating artery thrombotic
  1. most common, 1+ vessels affected
3. cardiogenic embolic
  1. cardiac dysrrhythmias usually A. fib,
4. cryptogenic
  1. cause unknown
5. Pathophsyiology
  1. Ischemic cascade
    1. cerebral blood flow decr. to <25ml/100g/min, anaerobic resp = lactic acid incr = pH change
6. CM's
  1. numbness/weakness of face, arm, leg esp. unilaterally
  2. mental status change
    1. dysarthria - difficulty speaking, dysphasia - impaired speech, aphasia - loss of speech (receptive, expressive, mixed), apraxia - can't perform learned ability
    2. Right sided - distractibility, impulsive, spatial/perceptual dysfx
    3. Left sided - cautious, slow, aphasia, alt intellect
Hemorrhagic Stroke
1. chiefly caused by uncontrolled HTN
2. longer recovery phase/more severe deficits than ischemic
3. s/s - decr LOC, exploding HA
