        1. "Atrocities" an extremely wicked or cruel act, typically one involving physical violence or injury.

                    1. Short Title
                      1. This Act may be Called as SC and ST Act of 1989
                        1. It extends to the whole of India except the State of Jammu & Kash- mir.
                          1. It shall come into force on such date as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint.

                            1. Atrocity” means an offence punishable under section 3;
                              1. "Code” means the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 (2 of 1974);
                                1. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes” shall have the mean-ings assigned to them respectively under clause (24) and clause (25) of article 366 of the Constitution:
                                  1. (24) Scheduled Castes means such cases, races or tribes or parts of or groups within such castes, races or tribes as are deemed under Article 341 to be Scheduled Castes for the purposes of this Constitution;
                                    1. (25) Scheduled Tribes means such tribes or tribal communities or parts of or groups within such tribes or tribal communities as are deemed under Article 342 to be Scheduled Tribes for the purposes of this Constitution;
                                    2. Special Court” means a Court of Session specified as a Special Court in section 14;
                                      1. Special Public Prosecutor” means a Public Prosecutor specified as a Special Public Prosecutor or an advocate referred to in section 15;
                                        1. words and expressions unsed but not defined in this Act and de-fined in the Code or the Indian Penal Code (45 of 1860) shall have the meanings assigned to them respectively in the Code, or as the case may be, in the Indian Penal Code.

                                          2. Any reference in this Act to any enactment or any provision thereof shall in relation to an area in which such enactment or such provision is not in force, be construed as a reference to the corresponding law, if any, in force in that area.

                                          1. Punishment for offences of atrocities.
                                            1. 3. (1) Whoever, not being a member of a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribes.
                                              1. Who Commit Offence against SC and ST, may Punished Under Section 3, as per Above Defintions
                                                1. Section 3(i) forces a member of a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe to drink or eat any inedible or obnoxious substance;
