  1. Attitudes that change our character (Beatitudes 1-4)
    1. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
      1. "Poor in spirit" means to be humble
        1. You are able to realize that all gifts and blessings come from God.
          1. You are open to the Word of God which allows you to do the will of God.
        2. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.
          1. Mourning is called a blessing because it creates in us a desire to improve ourselves and to do what is right.
            1. We mourn and regret over sin.
              1. We mourn for the suffering of others.
            2. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
              1. A person who is gentle and kind
                1. A person who exhibits self-control
                2. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
                  1. A person who continuously desires for justice and moral perfection will be led to a fulfillment of that desire - a transition and conversion to holiness.
                3. Attitudes that guide us in getting along with others (Beatitudes 5-8)
                  1. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
                    1. Forgiveness towards one's neighbor
                      1. As we are merciful to others, God will also be merciful with us.
                    2. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.
                      1. Free of all selfish intentions and self-seeking desires - an act of pure love
                      2. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
                        1. Those who suffer for God's sake
                        2. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
                          1. Must first have peace within before bringing peace to others
                            1. Preserve peace between God and man
                              1. Live peaceful lives
