          2. not all of the 4 features used to define a total inst may be present in each inst
          3. can't be totally open otherwise there would be no institution
        2. A TOTAL INST. is a place of residence and wrk where a large no. of people in the same situation live/wrk cut off frm wider society for a prolonged period of time
          1. every inst has encompassing tendancies (residential/nursing homes)
