Is a reading for a high
degree of
comprehension and
retention over a long
period of time.
principals of intensive reading
Overview
Surveying & Skimming
we only read the more important parts.
We would next read the headings.
When headings are missing or
inadequate, or where unfamiliar
material demands a more complete
overview, we would resort to
skimming with its greater attention to
topic and summary sentences, and
other cues within the paragraphs.
Planning Purpose:means to take a few
seconds before you begin your reading
to formalize or clearly state to yourself
what you wish to get from the reading.
This will give us the most useful "mental
set" for getting the information we
need.
Reading: means not only the familiar
line-by-line reading, but reading that is
guided by our purpose and questions.
Understanding: The end product of the
steps in intensive reading is to be sure that
you understand every important question.
If you omit a point, or answer a question
incorrectly, you should go back and review
that point immediately
Intensive
Extensive
The aim of Extensive Reading is to help the student
become better at the skill of reading rather than
reading to study the language itself. When
students are reading extensively they : they read
quickly and enjoyably with adequate
comprenhension so they dont need a dictionary
When students ‘learn to read’
(Extensive Reading), they are
practicing the skill of reading by
reading for information –
reading a story book for
example with the aim of
enjoying the reading without
consciously knowing they are
learning.
The aim is to build reading fluency -
not necessarily to learn new things
(although they may learn some), and
to deepen their knowledge of
already met language items and to
get a better sense of how these fit
together communicatively
