Question Answer
What is the word equation for photosynthesis? Carbon dioxide +water > glucose + oxygen
What is the balanced symbol equation for photosynthesis?
What is the glucose used for? -to make cellulose for plant cell walls -used to make proteins for plant growth and repair -used as energy -stored as starch -stored as fats and oils
What is the oxygen used for? -used in respiration -released into air
Why is starch good for storage? -it is insoluble and therefore not easily lost form the cell in solution - it is not very reactive -it does not affect the water concentration inside cells
What conditions are needed for photosynthesis? Light energy and chlorophyll
Why does warmth increase the rate of photosynthesis? Higher temperatures increase the rate of reaction of enzymes involved in photosynthesis.
What was Priestly's experiment and what did he discover? He put part of a mint plant in a transparent closed space with a burning candle (which used up the oxygen). After 27 days he was able to relight the candle. The plant had produced oxygen.
What conditions speed up photosynthesis? -warmth -increased carbon dioxide levels -increased amount of light
How is a leaf adapted for photosynthesis? >the epidermis is thin and transparent, allowing light through to inner cells >the palisade cells contain large numbers of chloroplasts to absorb a lot of light energy >the chloroplasts are arranged mainly down the sides of the palisade cells, allowing some light to reach the mesophyll cells >air spaces between mesophyll cells allow gases to diffuse easily and reach all cells >the mesophyll cells are small and irregular, this increases their surface area to volume ratio so large amounts of gases can enter and exit the cells.
