Question Answer
Define topology Topology is the layout of a network, there are three commonly used topolgies
Name the advantages and disadvantages of the bus network topology Advantages: 1. easy to set up 2. cheap Disadvantages: 1. problems with the back bone can bring the whole network down 2. Limited distance can be covered 3. Many data collisions slow the network down
Name the advantages and disadvantages of the star network topology Advantages: 1. robust - problems with one connection will not affect the whole network. 2. fewer data collision than bus so it's faster Disadvantages: 1. needs more expertise to maintain 2. can be expensive to set up because more building work involved and more network hardware and software needed
Name the advantages and disadvantages of the ring network topology Advantages: 1. very fast - no collisions because traffic is one way Disadvantages: 1. problems with the backbone can bring the whole network down 2. data passes through every node - this makes the network vulnerable to malfunctions
