Question Answer
What is an ion? An ion is an atom that has lost or gained electrons, making it positively or negatively charged.
What is an anion? An anion is a negatively charged ion.
What is a cation? A cation is a positively charged ion.
What characteristics do Group 1 metals share? Group 1 metals are all silver in colour and are soft metals. They all react with water to produce a metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas.
What is the trend as you go down Group 1 of the periodic table? The further you progress down Group 1, the more reactive the element is.
Why do Group 1 elements have similar properties? Group 1 elements have similar properties as they all have one electron in their outermost shell.
Why does the reactivity of Group 1 elements increase down the group? The reactivity increases because the outer electron gets further from the nucleus, as the atoms get larger, and due to this there is less attraction between the nucleus and outer electron, so the electron is more easily lost and therefore the element is more reactive.
What is another name for Group 7 elements? Another name for Group 7 elements is 'Halogens'.
What is the trend as you go down Group 7 of the periodic table? As you go down Group 7, the elements become less reactive.
How can you see the trend in reactivity in Group 7? You can see the trend in reactivity by reacting Group 7 elements with iron wool.
What are the 3 sub-atomic particles in an atom? Atoms contain 3 sub atomic particles - Electrons Protons Neutrons
What are the relative charges of protons, neutrons and electrons? Proton: +1 Neutron: no charge Electron: -1
If an atom loses an electron, what charge will it have as an ion? The resulting ion will have a positive charge.
If an atom gains an electron, what charge will it have as an ion? The resulting ion will have a negative charge.
What are isotopes? Isotopes are atoms of an element with the same number of protons and electrons, but a different number of neutrons.
Do isotopes have to be radioactive? No, isotopes can be radioactive or non-radioactive.
How many electrons can be held in the first shell of an atom? 2 electrons can be held in the first shell of an atom. Subsequent shells can hold a maximum of 8 electrons.
