Alliteration The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. EX) The ruby red rose lay on a table.
Hyperbole Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. EX) My car is as old as the hills.
Idiom A group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words. EX) Her garden is beautiful; she must have a green thumb.
Imagery visually descriptive or figurative language EX) the soft blanket and fluffy pillow helped me fall asleep.
Metaphor A figurative language that makes a direct comparison of two like things. EX) The calm lake was a mirror, reflecting the mountains in the distance.
Onomatopoeia The use of a word that imitates the sound of something. EX) The duck will quack if it is hungry.
Personification The practice of giving human qualities to non living things or animals. EX) The stop sign scolded at the car to stop.
Simile Comparison between 2 things using like or as. EX) The brick was as tough as nails.
