Question Answer
What is taxonomy. The science of naming and classifying organisms according to similarities
How does taxonomy grouping work? The most similar taxa are grouped into a genus, the most similar genera are grouped into a family and so on to order, phylum, kingdom, and finally domain
If you add all subheadings how many groupings are there? 35
Who came up with the specific naming system? Carl Vo Linne 1707-1778
Why did he choose Latin names? What else de we know about him? He chose Latin to not show any favour to any of the popular languages in Europe at the time. He was a Swedish botanist who published two papers on the naming subject. After he changed his name to latin
What are the two parts of the species name? What does this mean? Made up of a genus and an epithet name. This means the species can't be identified with just the last part as it could apply to any number of species in different genera
What are the rules when writing a taxonomy name? Only the first letter of the first word is capitalized. The names should be italicizes or underlined. If it is underlined but words must be underlined separately.
How are species named? Where they are found e.g. Castor canadensis is the Canadian beaver. Also by who discovered it or who was an important contributor.
If you see a L. At the end of a species name what does that mean? It means this species was originally named by Linnaeus in one of his two publications
What does (Doe.) at the end Of a species name mean? This I s an authors name. This means the name of the species has been changed from its original name
What if two scientist is want the same exact name for two different species? The scientist who's publication comes out first gets the name
What is systematics? The study that studies and Trieste establish phylogenies. Works with evolution but is not the same with evolution as the mother concept that systematics is a part of. Systematics is like a destination with many ways to get there.
What is phylogeny? The evolutionary history of organisms. All organisms have ancestors that they share characteristics with and with eachother
What is homology? Similarities do to charged ancestry but that don't necessarily have the same function.
