Question Answer
Why is the response to injury very dynamic in nature? The injury is the stressor to the individual athlete who evaluates that injury in accordance with personal and situational factors thus the response to the injury is very much dependent on how the athletes perceives the injury not the injury itself.
What 3 types of Psychological Response do we exhibit when we get injured? Cognitive, Emotional, Behavioral.
What are the Cognitive Responses we exhibit when injured? We try to attribute the reason for injury (Behavioural or Mechanical/technical factors). We question our self-perception (loss of athletic identity, loss of self esteem and self worth, loss of self efficacy and self-confidence). We employ coping strategies which are cognitive processes used to combat psychological consequences of injury (Problem Focused or Emotion Focused). Those who may cognitively cope better with injury may perceive the possible benefits of the injury (personal growth, challenge, sport performance enhancement)
What are the Emotional Responses we exhibit when injured? Emotional Response is often a temporal one, thus emotions change as we progress through the injury process. In the early stage of injury we may exhibit negative emotions (Depression, Frustration, Confusion, Anger, Fear) In the middle stage of rehab we still may exhibit some negative emotions (depression, frustration) but our focus is shifting to more rehab related concerns. In the late stage of rehab, once again we may still exhibit depression and frustration, but as we move closer to return our focus may return to injury return and thus fear of reinjury. Both Personal (age) and Sutuational (Sport, Social, Environmental, type of Injury) factors affect emotional response.
What are some signs of poor emotional injury adjustment? (Weinberg and Gould 2003) Feelings of anger and confusion, Denial, Repeatedly coming back to early and experiencing re-injury, dwelling on minor physical complaints, guilt about letting the team down, statements indicating that no matter what is done recovery will not occur.
What are the Behavioral Responses we exhibit when injured? Rehab adherence (ranges from 40-90%), Use of coping behaviors- skiers who sustained season ending injuries used such behaviors as: Driving Through, Distracting Oneself, Seeking social resources, Isolating oneself.
Why is it important to understand the Psychological Impact of Injury? Raise awareness of the psychological factors affecting injury experience, Assist in Rehab through advancing coping skills, prevent adverse reactions that may disrupt or delay rehab.
In Walker, Thatcher and Lavallee 2007 what extreme symptoms did some athletes experience following injury? 10-20% of athletes experience extreme reactions, including depressive symptoms, and suicidal tendencies.
What did Brewer et al 1995 and Taylor and Taylor 1997 find in regard to the Psychological Trauma's of being Injured? Athletes should a perceive inability to cope with there injury which may progress into feelings of guilt, inadequacy, fear, loss of autonomy. These factors can lead to barriers to rehab, such as a lack of motivation and an inability to manage pain.
What are some potential dangers of returning to sport after injury when you are physically but not mentally ready? and what can this lead to? Fears of re-injury, problems sleeping. These factors cam result in: Re-injury, New Injury, Decreased self confidence and performance, depression.
What Psychological responses where found by physiotherapists in injured athletes? (Hemmings and Povey 2002) Stress/Anxiety, Exercise Addiction, Problems with Concentration, Problems with treatment compliance, Anger, Depression.
According to Hemmings and Povey 2002 what characteristics were exhibited by athletes who cope less successfully with injury? Non-compliance, Impatience, Poor Motivation, Lack of Understanding, Depression, Unrealistic Goals, Pessimism, Too eager to return, Anxiety, Anger.
According to Hemmings and Povey 2002 what characteristics were exhibited by athletes who cope successfully with injury? Compliance, Positive Attitude, Motivation, Patience, Determination, Good Listening, Understanding, Realistic Expectation, Intelligence, Commitment.
Does Injury Response Relate to How Athletes Perceive there Injury?
