Step 1 Fertilisers are washed off fields, and into ponds, lakes and rivers.
Step 2 The fertilisers in the water increase the nitrate and phosphate levels in the water.
Step 3 Algae now goes quickly on the surface of the water due to the presence of theses chemicals.
Step 4 The algae blocks of the sunlight to other plants, so they now die.
Step 5 Aerobic bacteria use up all the oxygen in the water and feed on the dead plants. Most living organisms die.
