What is gastric juice produced by? Special cells in the stomach wall.
What does gastric juice contain? -hydrochloric acid -mucus -digestive juices
What is hydrochloric acid? A strong acid that kills many of the bacteria that may have entered the body with the food.
What is mucus? It creates a layer on the lining of the stomach and prevents the stomach digesting itself
What are digestive juices? They contain chemicals that start the digestion of protein, the main nutrient found in meat.
What is the duodenum? It is the first part of your small intestine.
What do the two tubes entering the duodenum carry? They carry chemicals important for digestion.
What is a pancreas? It is an organ that produces pancreatic juice.
What does the pancreatic juice help digest? -Carbohydrates -Fats -Protein
What is bile? Bile is a greenish liquid responsible for chemical digestion of fats.
What does the body use as its main source of energy? It uses glucose.
What is the anus? A sphincter muscle at the end of the digestive tract.
What is vomiting? Vomiting is a quick way of getting rid of unwanted bacteria in the digestive tract.
What does diarrhoea do? Diarrhoea is another quick way of getting rid of harmful bacteria and viruses.
What is a heartburn? Heartburn is a burning sensation that rises up the oesophagus to your stomach.
What is the appendix? The appendix is a blind-ended tube connected to the large intestine.
What are the three disorders of the digestive system? -Vomiting -Diarrhoea -Heartburn
What does the villi do? It greatly increases the surface area through which nutrients can be absorbed from the small intestine.
What happens in the large intestines? Food you eat are processed into faeces.
What is the largest internal organ in the body? The liver.
