Question Answer
• Via the Five Dynasties Period core painter, Cui Bo • Can be categorized as a "Bird and Flower" painting • Bird, rabbit, branch, and leaves are depicted naturalistically • Careful observations of the elements that are depicted
• Via Huang Quan, another Five Dynasties Period court painter • Possibly used to teach younger artists • Served as a "painting menu" • Keen observations to details • Realistic interpretation • Use of fine brushwork
- cute monkey holding a cat - fine brushwork typical of the "bird and flower painting" - noticing writing (and stamps?) on the upper left and right sides of the painting
- Is one of two major formats at the time, a hanging scroll (the other format is a hand scroll) - is of a monumental landscape style: a large amount of the background is occupied by monumental peaks - full scene landscape - divided up into top, middle, and bottom composition - travelers would cross the bridge - depiction of a wine shop, motels, pavilion by the river - in the middle composition, on top of hill we see a Buddhist monastery - artist is able to show us all of this via the three grounds composition - various standing points lifted to shift the perspective of the composition
