What is an example of biblical criticism? looking at the type of writing, if a part of the bible is full of symbolism then it won't be taken literally, but if it is narrative then it will be scrutinised more
What was Barth's criticism of biblical criticism? you shouldn't put your modern views on the bible but should apply the bible to your life
What is the fundamentalist criticism of biblical criticism? the bible is the word of God and should be taken literally and critically viewing it would undermine the straight forward meaning if the bible

What is feminist theology? An in depth study of a religion, with a specific feminist focus. This could focus on the role of women in the religion, the history of women and/or the future of women
What are the three strands to feminist theology? Liberal,biblical and radical
What is the liberal strand? presenting the patriarchal system as illogical, denying the fundamental rights of equality with men
What is the biblical strand? looks at the idea of God as loving and caring, and the importance of women in Jesus' life
What is the radical strand? seeks to find ways to talk to God, which are true to our present day ways of thinking, including gender equality
Who is Daphne Hampson, and what does she say about Christianity? Hampson is a post-Christian, feminist and believes Christianity isn't true
Hampson on Christianity? science shows the resurrection isn't possible, impossible to separate Christianity with it's patriarchal views, one person with a different relationship with God doesn't make sense, it isn't moral, we must arrive at our own morality instead of following the dogma of the bible, 'irredeemably sexist'
Who is Rosemary Radford Reuther, and what does she say about Christianity? Reuther is a Roman Catholic, feminist and liberation theologist
Reuther on Christianity? Jesus recognised the need and strengths of women and had feminine characteristics, and was androgynous, implies women can be more like Jesus as they have more of his characteristics such as caring,healing and forgiving

What do Catholics believe about priestly celabacy? they see it as positive in offering oneself to God
Why do some Catholics think the rule on priestly celibacy should be relaxed? Fall in numbers of those who are seeking ordination
What does the orthodox church think about celabacy? married men can become ordained but not after ordination and bishops can't be married
What do Anglican and protestant churches believe about celibacy? clergy are often married, some evangelical protestants, oppose celibacy as it goes against teachings in 1 Timothy 3 1-7
What did Benedict XVI say about ceibacy? Celibacy does not mean 'remaining empty in love, but rather must mean allowing oneself to be overcome by a passion for God'
What was the early churches approach to marriage and celibacy? either you get married or remain celibate, marriage was seen as a sacrament and raising a family a vocation
How can a catholic 'remarry' if the marriage gets annulled, if not they are still married in the eyes of God and the church
What do protestants believe about divorce? marriage is an ordinance and not a sacrament therefore divorce and remarriage is accepted
what are some possible problems with marriage for Christians today? 1. it is seen as pleasing the people in the relationship rather than God 2. marriages can happen without any religious aspects 3. can divorced couples fully take part in the church again 4. gay marriage?
What does all this mean for Christians? that there are no solid answers and every christian will have to decide for themselves to the problems raised
What does 1 Timothy 2:8-15 8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. 9 I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10 but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. 11 A woman[a] should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[b] she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women[c] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.
Why is 1 Timothy 2 8;15 bad? it says that women shouldn't be able to teach and that men should have all the power
how can you apply Biblical criticism to 1 Timothy 2 8-15? it was a letter to a certain church, dealing with a certain problem we don't know who wrote it, new testament scholars don't believe Paul wrote it women would have been less educated than men at the time specific and not universal we don't have the full letter
What is gender equalitarianism? the idea that men and women are equal and there should be no distinction between them and their roles
What is gender complementarianism? men and women are equal but different, they complement each other, men, leader and workers, women, mothers and home makers
Who was Florence Li Tim-oi? a deaconess and ordained priest in WW2, as so few men
What happened in the general synod in 1978? no 'fundamental objections' to women being ordained, it passed the house of Bishops and Laity but blocked in the House of Clergy

Criticisms of Hampson? Christianity isn't fascist, extreme statement, not all Christians think this way
Criticisms of Reuther? these 'characteristics of women' are actually just constructs of the patriarchy, Jesus wasn't androgynous and didn't perform the role that women played in his time

W£hat is the Catholics approach to trans people? rejects changing gender, surgery doesn't change ones gender, marriage of trans people wouldn't be valid
What are some christian arguments against transgender people? imagio dei, created in gods image and doesn't make mistakes, Jerimiah, God knit us in the womb
