What struggles did the new colonists face? Backbreaking labor, lack of good land, debt, dangerous transport to canada
What was government like in UC before the 1837 Rebellion? Family Compact was in charge, any land owners could vote but government and appointed council could veto any laws
Why was land such a issue for people in UC? Almost everybody wanted to own/farm land. Crown and Clergy reserves took up 2/7th of land and were scattered so it blocked road development
What kind of society did Britain want to create in UC? Aristocratic; An English society under British rule with British laws
What was life like for women in UC? Worked in the home and labored in fields
Why did the British government and Family Compact not want responsible government? They wanted to take care of themselves and ignore the needs of other classes
Briefly describe the reasons for and the results of the 1837 Rebellion in UC? Reasons: Seeking land reform and government reform Result: Rebellions lost, Mackenzie fled, disguised as a woman to the US
What concerns did the French Canadians have in LC? Discrimination against the french, lack of representation in government and taxes

Why was his report not well liked in LC? The French in LC were to be assimilated
